The 2018 State System GISS will be a national gathering of state governing boards from across the country for a two-day institute.


In partnership with the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) with support from the Strada Education Network is hosting a nationally acclaimed institute designed expressly for boards for state systems, universities governing boards responsible for community colleges, and technical college system boards and their leaders. Guided by ACCT’s national expertise, state and system leaders will engage in thoughtful and courageous conversations around the importance of effective and data-informed governance policies design to support student success, equity, completion and workforce preparation for their states.


The Governance Institute for Student Success (GISS) has designed an exclusive institute that will create connections between higher education results and economic development for state system leaders. 


LOCATION & MEETING TIME: The Institute will be held at the Executive Center in the Alabama Center for Advanced Technology and Training (ACATT) building at Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama.

• Tuesday, April 10, 2018, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Includes full Breakfast and Lunch)



We encourage whole boards to attend, but at least three or more trustees and the State System CEO/Chancellor/President and college presidents.  Having representatives from senior system and college staff and research officers attend is also highly recommended.

COST:  To help enable broad participation in this important dialogue, Strada Education Network is providing grant support to cover registration and meals during the 2018 State Systems GISS institute. Participating boards and colleges are responsible for their other associated travel expenses.


MEALSInstitute meals are covered by Strada Education Network and provided by the Lawson State Community College Culinary Program. They will provide breakfast and lunches for the two days.


TRAVEL AND LODGING:  Participating state systems are responsible for all travel and lodging arrangements and associated costs. Below is a recommended local hotel near the airport and the college. We have reserved a group rate and college shuttle for this hotel only.  Rates guaranteed until March 15th.

Reservations will be made by:  Individual Call-In.   Individual Call-In reservations can be made by reserving online, go to, then enter Group number of 2331578.  Reservations may also be made by calling 1-800-325-0720 and refer to the Group number of 2331578. 


Individual reservations must be cancelled prior to 12:00 p.m. on the confirmed date of arrival in order to avoid a fee equal to one night’s room rate plus tax. We require a valid credit card and photo ID to be presented at check in. Check In Time: 3:00 p.m. Check Out Time: 11:00 a.m. Arrangements may be made for baggage storage with the Hotel’s front desk staff.


LOCAL TRANSPORTATION: There are no airport shuttles to the hotel.  Shuttle service will be provided from Lawson State Community College and the Drury Inn & Suites during the institute dates.
